SYNOPSIS

Jake and Rebecca escape to a tranquil mountain community, eager to start anew in their charming riverside home. However, their idyllic life is shaken when they meet their enigmatic neighbors, Dave, Michelle, and their son Cole.

As Jake grows increasingly convinced that Dave is abusing Cole, he wrestles with the moral dilemma of intervening, while Rebecca warns him against meddling in their neighbors’ lives. Torn between his instincts and his wife’s caution, Jake embarks on a harrowing journey that forces him to confront his own past and the lengths he will go to protect an innocent child. In this gripping tale of tension and unresolved trauma, the line between right and wrong becomes dangerously blurred.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

How do we escape the socially prescribed role we’re indoctrinated into? How do we fight back against the brainwashing, the oppressive construct that we were born to fulfill a certain way of being in the world? Can we truly repel the labels and gender roles forced upon us within a society rooted in patriarchal thinking? How do we know what is us, truly us; and differentiate between what we are made to believe is us? How do we not lose ourselves completely? These are questions I’ve been asking myself for a while, and I don’t really have any answers. But I think the questioning is the important element. With Beau Ideal, I wanted to explore these questions by mixing a few different ingredients: my personal history with abuse and generational trauma, my 15 years working with Children’s Protective Services, and a dash of my love for 90s thrillers. I wanted to examine a character who believes himself to be perfect in many ways, the ideal modern man. A caring, sensitive man repulsed by patriarchal constructs and masculine definitions of the past. But also, someone attracted to some of those past ideals: the strong hero who doesn’t back down in the face of evil. How is one heroic? Is there a single way? What does it even mean to be a hero? Our protagonist, Jake, struggles with these questions, and they are brought to a head when his own past experiences get in the way of being that hero for a young, mistreated boy next door. The lens through which we see the world is just that - a lens. Our own personal lens created by our upbringing, the experiences we’ve had, and how we coped with those experiences. I hope that when people experience this film, they are left to ponder the questions. Maybe they can answer some for me.

LOWELL DEO

IN THE ROLE OF TERRANCE JACOBS

Tackling Sheriff Terrance Jacobs in Beau Ideal was a wild ride for Lowell Deo. The role of the conflicted sheriff continues a string of meaty and challenging roles for Lowell who is fresh off The Way We Speak as well as portrayals of the misunderstood pigeon fancier in the upcoming film Little Wing; the ebullient interviewer in last summer’s Dreamin’ Wild; even the classically conflicted Dr. Livesey in a reimagined retelling of Treasure Island. Lowell’s stage turns have ranged from similarly pushed-to-the-edge characters: like the ‘Art Restorer’ in BAT Theatre’s reading of the Jason Odell Williams’ play Destroying David; ‘Kevin’ in Yussef El Guindi’s Language Rooms; to ‘James the Lesser’ in Gaydar Production’s staging of Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi. Lowell is proud to have gotten to play in the shadow world of Beau Ideal.

EDD BLOTT
PRODUCER/CO-DIRECTOR

For as long as he can remember, Edd Blott has loved telling stories. His grandfather, a painter, was instrumental in cultivating Edd’s passion for the arts. His focus on cinema began in high school when he first saw Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion. A newly born cinephile at that moment, he began immersing himself in world cinema from all eras and experimenting on his own with whatever camera he could get his hands on. His other directing credits include the feature films Escaping Freedom and A Tale of Delight. Currently, Edd is developing his next project, the psychological thriller Phantom People.
